Commonly Asked Questions

Guided Fly Fishing Trips: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there a deposit required for a guided fly fishing trip reservation, and what is the cancellation policy?

Yes, we do require a 50% deposit per guide per day to hold your reservation. Deposits are refundable up to 14 days prior to your trip day. Within 14 days, you will lose your deposit, as many of our guides, once booked, will therefore turn down other clients to honor your booking. Your cancellation will cost the guide a trip in a very short season; therefore, you will forfeit your deposit if you cancel within 14 days of your scheduled trip.

2. What if it rains or snows on the day of my guided trip?

We want you to have a good time on your trip and will not go out if it is dangerously cold. Although, for better or worse, some of the best fly fishing occurs in nasty weather. We very rarely cancel a trip due to rain, as most storms are short-lived. A rain jacket helps tremendously, and as said above, some of the best fishing will be the result of poor weather.

3. Who will be my guide?

We specialize in matching you with a guide that will provide you with the experience you are seeking. The majority of our guides are on the water 5 to 6 days a week. If you request a certain guide, we will schedule you with him should his or her schedule allow.

4. Do we need to make advance reservations for our guided trip?

It is always nice to make a reservation for one of our professional guides, as we can then guarantee that you have a guide ready-to-go when you arrive. Some of the guides that have been here for years get booked far in advance, and it would be a good idea to book them early (2 to 4 weeks before your arrival). We rarely turn a trip down, even if you want to book the day before you would like to go out. Please keep in mind that during high season (July 4 to August 20), you may experience some difficulties in finding an available guide without advance scheduling. Generally, we recommend booking your fly fishing trip as far in advance as possible.

5. Where and when do we meet?

During the summer months, walk-wade trips will meet at Dragonfly Anglers in Crested Butte at 8:00 a.m., unless other arrangements have been made. The busiest times of the year may see us stagger our meeting times to avoid mass confusion in the shop. For float trips, you will usually meet the guide at the selected launching site on the Gunnison River. Our guides will have their shuttles ran and will be ready to launch upon your arrival. We will communicate with you no later than the day before for details about the launch site and meeting time.

6. What is included in the price of a guide trip?

The guided trip fee includes the guide, loaner fly rod and reel, waders and wading boots if needed, and transportation to the river and back to the shop. Full day trips include a very nice lunch consisting of sandwich of your choice (Turkey, Ham, Roast Beef, Veggie), fruit, drink, water, chips, and a cookie. The trip fee does not include license fees, flies or gratuity to the guide.

7. Purchasing a Colorado Fishing License!

One key thing to remember when purchasing a Colorado fishing license is that the State of Colorado absolutely 100% requires the purchaser of a license to give their Social Security Number to the License Agent in order to obtain a fishing License. There is no way around this fact and a license cannot be issued without it.
